It could, but it’s a temporary treatment for this condition. Heartburn is not related to the heart. It is a digestive condition where stomach acid flows from the stomach back into the esophagus. The esophagus is the tract that connects your mouth to your stomach. This backwash of acid can irritate your esophagus which causes heartburn. Heartburn is the burning feeling anywhere from the middle of your abdomen to your throat. This can happen when the muscle that opens and closes between your esophagus and stomach, is weakened and does not perform its job properly. Most of the people occasionally suffer from heartburn usually after a meal, but some people experience this problem daily.
Baking Soda as a Heartburn Home Remedy
Baking soda is a natural antacid. Scientifically it is known as sodium bicarbonate. If you drink a teaspoon of baking soda dissolved in 1glass of water, it can neutralize your stomach acid and temporarily eliminate the heartburn caused by acid reflux. It’s my advice to don’t drink alcohol because alcohol weakens the LES muscle. Drinking alcohol before, during, or after meals can increase the heartburn problem.
How to use Baking soda for Heartburn
Baking Soda and Water
- Take 1 teaspoon of baking soda into a glass of water
- Stir it well and drink it.
- Drink regularly to get relief from acid reflux.
Note: Use ½ cup of water and 1 tablespoon baking soda for faster relief. Do not use this treatment if you’re suffering from acid reflux problem continuously because it may increase blood pressure and causes nausea and swelling.
Baking Soda with Honey
- Take 1 teaspoon of baking soda and 1 teaspoon of raw honey in a cup of warm water.
- Stir it well until baking soda is completely dissolved
- Now drink it.
- Use this remedy whenever you feel Heartburn.
Baking Soda with Lemon
- Take ½ teaspoon of baking soda and ½ teaspoon of fresh-squeezed lemon juice in a cup of warm water.
- Stir it well, until the baking soda is completely dissolved in water.
Note: You can drink it regularly to reduce acid reflux.
Baking Soda with Apple Cider Vinegar
- Take 1/4 teaspoon of baking soda and 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar
- Mix it in 200 ml of water.
- Now stir it well and drink this solution 2 – 3 times in a day with an empty stomach.
Note: do not follow this remedy more than 5 days.
Tips and Precautions:
Baking soda can cause gas, nausea, abdominal distention, belching, discomfort, and pain when used in excess.
It can cause dis-functioning of the digestive system.
Because it contains sodium, baking soda treatments can raise blood pressure.
Adults can consume not more than 6 glasses of baking soda solution in 24 hours and children under the age of 5years should not use it at all.

Avoid foods which include chocolate, peppermint, caffeinated beverages, alcohol, fatty foods, and greasy or fried foods to avoid heartburns.
Avoid junk food; it is completely unhygienic for your health. Junk food is the main factor of causing heartburn in youngsters.
Avoid foods and beverages that include citrus fruits and juices, tomatoes and tomato-based products, chili peppers, and black pepper because it may irritate the esophagus.
Eat five or six small meals instead of three larger ones are better. Large meals increase the pressure against the LES muscle, which causes heartburns.
